Today was actually a good thrifting day, for once I'm not too good at telling stories, so I'll keep it simple. Jeremy and I went thrift shopping this afternoon. We stopped at the store next to Sound Exchange Tampa, and behind the counter they had an absolutely beautiful Bolex double-8mm movie camera, with accessories (two Kern/Switar lenses, pistol grip, and case). It was a slice of Swiss camera beauty - and they wanted $70 for it. That, and the fact that I couldn't get it to run, made me decide not to splurge on it. It hurt to walk away, but we ventured to Salvation Army, hoping to find cheaper things... We roll up to the Salvation Army, and I go straight for the cameras. They have a Canon FTb, which was acting funny in the shutter speeds (and they wanted $60 for), and this camera, a Canon EOS Rebel S II. Having good memories of my old Rebel K2, I picked it up and had a look at it. Not bad condition - the battery was dead, so I couldn't check it. It was marked $25, but the guy behind the counter said that every camera was half off. So I figured, what would it hurt? I bought the Rebel S II for $12.49. I figured that if the body was shot, the lens alone would at least be worth that much. Me, Jeremy, and the camera get back to the store, and curiosity gets the better of me... I ran out and bought a new battery for it. IT'S ALIVE!!! It totally works. And I got it for a grand total of $22.49 (the battery was $10). I loved my old Rebel K2. It got stolen, unfortunately, and even though these aren't the best of cameras, I still missed it. And now I have a new one. Canon A-1 + Canon New FD 85mm f1.2 L The A-1 was the top-of-the-line A-series camera. (The AE-1 was the first in this series.) It was a sophisticated electronic camera with all-digital control. Besides the shutter speed-priority AE and aperture-priority AE modes, it featured the first fully automatic program AE mode, preset aperture-priority AE, and Speedlite AE mode. The viewfinder information was also easy to read with a 7-segment red LED readout. The control settings were displayed at the same time which made it very useful. Besides Power Winder A, developed at the same time as the AE-1, accessories for the A-1 included the compact Motor Drive MA which attained a maximum shooting speed of 5 fps. This Motor Drive had a convenient vertical-grip shutter button. Also, there was the Speedlite 199A which had bounce flash capability. The A-1's body had a fine black finish.
